TIRUPATI – Tirumala Sri Venkateswara Temple

Tirupati a major pilgrimage city is famous for Venkateswara Swami Temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara or Lord Vishnu. The almighty Lord Vishnu is called as Balaji by the North Indians whereas as the South Indians call as Govinda. The Temple is situated atop the Tirumala Hills which consists of seven peaks known as Sapthagiri. The seven peaks represent the seven hoods of Adishesha, the serpent on whom Lord Vishnu lies in Vaikuntha. The Hill temple of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala is one of the most visited pilgrimage centers of the world.

The huge temple shrine is 415 feet long and263 feet wide. It has three prakaras or enclosures encircling the holy sanctum of Lord Venkateswara. It houses separate chambers for keeping his ornaments, holy silks, fresh garlands, sandal wood grinder all along his temple. It also Besides a Potu (kitchen) to make Laddu prasadam for devotees, there is also a special kitchen where the daily food (naivedyam) of Lord is prepared on a clock orange basis throughout the day.

The temple opens at 3:00 am and closes at midnight. According to practice, the Varahaswami Temple should be visited before visiting the temple of Sri Venkateswaraswami. There is always a huge queue for darshan which can be done through the paid darshan or through the free darshan. Special ‘sevas’ or paid darshans require an additional charge and are a little faster than the free queue. As well-known, Tirupati is popularly known for Laddu – the most familiar known prasadham.

The hills of Tirumala, which lie close to the city centre, are the second oldest rock mountains in the world. The Brahmotsavam celebrated every year during September is the most important festival in Tirumala when it receives millions of devotees over a short span of a week. Rathasapthami is another festival, celebrated during February, when Lord Venkateswara's idol is taken in a procession around the temple chariots.

By Bus

Tirupati is connected by good motorable roads to all major places. There are excellent bus services provided by private and State Road Transport Corporation, connecting Tirupati to other nearby cities.

By Train

The main railhead of the place is Tirupati Railway lies in Trivandrum-Delhi route and linked with all major cities in India. Taxis are easily available from outside of the railway station to explore the holy town of Tirupati.

By Air

Tirupati airport is nestled in the region of Renigunta, which is about 15 km away from the city. The adjacent International airport is Chennai. From airport you can board a taxi or a cab or a bus to reach Tirupati.
