Mussoorie

Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, Mussoorie is a popular hill station in the state of Uttarakhand in northern India. Known as the Queen of Hills the quaint town is located at an average altitude of 1,880 meters above sea level. Mussoorie is known for its scenic views, its lush green hills, amazing views of the Doon Valley and Shiwalik ranges on the south. Mussoorie is a popular destination for honeymooning couples, mainly because of its relatively cool, calm and lovely environment.

Mussoorie was discovered by Captain Young, an adventurous military officer in 1827. It commands a wonderful view of the extensive Himalayan snow ranges in the north-west and glittering views of the Doon Valley, Roorkee, Saharanpur and Haridwar in the South. The town retains much of its colonial charm and is well worth a visit for its beautiful scenery and lovely walks.

The name Mussoorie is derived from the word ‘Mansoor’, which is a shrub that grows in the area. Before the Tibetan Rebellion in 1959, the Central Tibetan Administration of the 14th Dalai Lama was established in the hill station. After the rebellion, it moved to Dharamsala where it is presently located.

Mussoorie is called the gateway to the Yamunotri and Gangotri shrines of Northern India. Due to its pleasant weather, which remains comfortable even in the middle of summer, the town is an ideal holiday getaway during the summers.
