Bidar

Bidar formerly known as Kalyani is a great medieval city and capital of the Bahamani and Barid Shahi dynasties. It is situated at an altitude of 2,200 feet above sea level on a plateau overlooking the Manjira river valley. It witnessed many vicissitudes in its eventful history. The name of Bidar appears to be derived from 'bidiru' which means bamboo. The place seems to have been known for bamboo clusters in the past, came to be known as 'Bidaroor' and then 'Bidare', 'Bidar'.

A number of historical monuments dating back to 15th century can be found here. The fort, the cannons, palaces in ruins, the magnificent tombs and the massive monuments, all combine to make a visit to this place a truly memorable. Tourists from around the world visit Bidar for exploring the historical monuments that date back to the Bahmani era. These monuments reflect the glory of the Bahamani rulers.

Bidar Fort which is one of the biggest forts in India is the most significant tourist attraction. Bidar witnessed the "religious revolution" under the Lingayat reformist Basavanna, founder of Shaivite sect of Virashaivas. Apart from history, the cool and refreshing environment of Bidar attracts travelers. Bidar is also known for its unique Bidri handicraft products.
