Badami

Badami the royal capital of the Chalukyas Dynasty, known as Vatapi in ancient India. The name Vatapi has its origins in a mythological tale of the Ramayana. Badami is settled in a valley at the base of a furrowed, are nacreous rock that rings Agastya Lake. It is a place which is full of cave temples, entryways, fortresses, dedications and carvings.

Badami claim the world famous magnificent rock-cut cave temples built by the Early Chalukyas who is great temple builders. The city is known for many inscriptions, some of which hold historic significance. A total of 18 inscriptions have been identified so far in Badami. It includes an inscription in Sanskrit using the old Kannada script, which dates back to the 6th century.

The Badami temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and the Jain Tirthankaras, displaying the secular nature of the Chalukyas of Vatapi or modern Badami. These temples are known for profusion of symbolic and mystical carvings of the highest order. Badami attracts a lot of tourists every year for its cave temples and its architecture.
