Hamppi

Hampi is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites traditionally known as Pampakshetra of Kishkindha. Situated on the southern bank of the river Tungabhadra Hampi is ruins of Vijayanagara, the former capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. The history of Hampi is related with the historical Kishkindha, which is known for the ‘Vanara’ or Monkey Kingdom, whose reference is also there in the epic Ramayana.

Saint Vidyaranya established the seat of Vijayanagara Empire in 1336 A.D, with the help of his devotee disciples Hakka and Bukka. A large number of royal buildings were raised by Krishnadeva Raya (AD 1509-30), the greatest ruler of the dynasty. The period witnessed resurgence of Hindu religion, art, architecture in an unprecedented scale.

Surrounded by majestic hills and lush valleys, the village offers you a pleasing view of more than 500 monuments of different types.The place is a significant religious centre of the Vijayanagara Empire due to the presence of the historic Virupaksha Temple along with many other monuments of the old city. The annual Vijayanagara festival organized every January by the Government of Karnataka Popularly known as Hampi Utsav.

How To Reach

By Bus

Hampi is connected by good motorable roads to all major places. There are excellent bus services provided by State Road Transport Corporation, connecting Hampi to other nearby cities.

By Train

Hospet is the nearest railhead which is 13 km away from Hampi. The railway station is connected by rail with Bengaluru, Hubli and Guntakal. Taxis and buses are easily available from Hospet to Hampi.

By Air

Bellary is the closest airport to Hampi about 63 km away. The airport is well connected to some major cities of the country. You can easily get taxis and buses to the reach Hampi.
