The name Chennai is a shortened form of Chennaipattanam, the name of the town that grew around Fort St. George, which was built by the English in 1639. Chennapattanam was named after the Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple; the word chenni in Tamil means face, and the temple was regarded as the face of the city.
Chennai is a perfect amalgam of traditions and modernity. The city is an important centre for Karnatic music and hosts a large cultural event, the annual Madras Music Season, which includes performances by hundreds of artists. The city has a diverse theatre scene and is one of the important centers for Bharata Natyam, a classical dance form.
Chennai encompasses handsomely carved temples, quiet beaches, colonial monuments historic landmarks and buildings. Tourism of the city offers umpteen interesting locations to visitors. The neighboring town of Mahabalipuram with its ancient temples and rock carvings of the 7th century is one of the most important tourist attractions of Chennai.
