Khajuraho Group of Monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Sites representing a distinct pattern of art and temple architecture. The heritage town is renowned for its Nagara-style sculptured temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain deities, and the sexually explicit carvings only on the periphery of the temple and are not present inside the temples or near the deities. The sculptured temples were built between 950 and 1050 AD, during the Chandella dynasty.

Known is known for its architectural wonder and peaceful environ. It represents a paean to life, to love, to joy, perfect in execution and sublime in expression. Life in every form and mood has been captured in stone, testifying not only to the craftsman's artistry but also to the extraordinary breadth of vision of the Chandela rulers.

Made up of sandstones the local tradition lists eighty-five temples but now only twenty-five are standing examples in various stages of preservation. Yasovarman built the temple of Vishnu, now famous as Lakshmana temple is an ornate and evolved example of its time proclaiming the prestige of the Chandellas.
