Agatti Island

Agatti Island – The Coral Paradise on Earth is also known as Agathy is situated at 248 nautical miles (459 km) from Kochi, in west of Kavaratti island. Agatti is the gateway of Lakshadweep and only coral reef island of India. The maximum length of island is 6 km and width is 1 km, having an area of 3.84 square km. Agatti has one of the most beautiful lagoons in Lakshadweep surrounded by multi colored coral fishes form all sides.

Coral growths and multicolored coral fishes abound in Agatti’s lagoons. Fishing is the most important industry of AGATTI which is perhaps the only island besides Minicoy getting surplus fish. Next to Fishing, Coir and Copra are the main industries.

The beaches of Agatti island is one of the best beaches in the world. Swimming is the best adventurous sport in Agatti. Scuba diving, sailing, deep sea fishing, water skiing, kayaking, snorkeling, lagoon cruising, canoeing and glass bottomed boat riding are the major aquatic sports.

Based on coral reef monitoring surveys, Agatti is declared as first marine community reserve. In Agatti Island marine area sea turtles are legally protected. All visitors (BOTH Indian & Foreign Nationals) required a valid permit to enter Agatti Island. GETTING THERE 

 

AIRPORT: Situated on the southern end of Agatti Island, Agatti is the only airport in Lakshadweep islands. There is only a single airline ‘Air India Regional’ which provides its services in this airport. Flights are available from Kochi and Bangalore. Air Indian operates daily (except Sunday) flight form Cochin (Kerala) to Agatti Island.

SHIP:Tourist ships taking 24 hr travel time from Kochi (Cochin) to Agatti Island, with the seating capacity of 150 passengers. There are no cabins in these ships and the class of journey is by A/c Chair Car. Cruiser ships are also operated between Kochi and Agatti. Having AC cabins and air-cooled decks these cruises ships are operated by official agency.

ENTRY PERMIT: Visitors require a permit to enter Agatti Island of Lakshadweep. The island is a restricted area for non-islanders under the Lakshadweep rules 1967. You may apply for permit at Islands Administrative office (Director of tourism) Union Territory (UT) of Lakshadweep, Cochin office of the Administrative officer and Assistant Director. You don’t bother about entry permit if your tour organized by tour organizer or resort.
