Nainital

NANITAL - Lake District Of India is one of the most picturesque hill station is set around the ebony-emerald Naini-Lake in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalaya. Glittering jewel in the Himalyan necklace, the hill town is blessed with scenic natural splendor and varied natural resources. The city derives its name from a temple dedicated to the goddess 'Naini Devi". The hill resort is founded by a European merchant and an enthusiastic hunter P. Barron in 1841.

The Naini Lake is believed one of the 51 Shakti Peeths where Sati's eyes fell and called Nain-tal or lake of the eye. The goddess Shakti is worshipped at the Naina Devi Temple on the north shore of the present day lake. The emerald waters of this mountain lake continue to retain their charm and beckon tourists from far and wide. Surrounded by mountains on three sides Nainital offer a panoramic view of Himalayan peaks on one side and the plains spread out on the other.

Located around the beautiful Naini-Lake the city is divided in two halves, with Tallital on the southern side of the lake and Mallital on the northern upper reaches. Its numerous lakes, stunning mountain vistas are a paradise for honeymooners and nature lovers. The many gaily coloured yachts on the sparkling lake have now become synonymous with this beautiful picture-postcard resort.
