HARIDWAR-The Gateway to God

Haridwar or Hari-dwar the Gateway to God open doors to the four pilgrimages – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Haridwar is referred to as Mayapuri, Gangadwar, and Mokshadwar in the ancient Hindu texts and epics. Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places ‘sapta-puris’ (seven sacred cities) and an important pilgrim destination.

The Kumbha Mela is being celebrated every 12 years. Millions of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists congregate in Haridwar to perform ritualistic bathing on the banks of the river Ganges to wash away their sins to attain Moksha. According to the Samudra Manthan, Haridwar along with Ujjain, Nashik and Allahabad is one of four sites where drops of Amrir (the elixir of immortality) accidentally spilled over from the pitcher.

The spot where the Amrit fell known Brahma Kund is located at Har Ki Pauri (literally, "footsteps of the Lord") and is considered to be the most sacred Ghat of Haridwar. One of the oldest beliefs states that anyone taking a dip in the holy river of Ganga here can achieve salvation. The main pilgrimage spots in Haridwar are located along the banks of the River Ganga.

Pilgrims who visit Haridwar have the custom of floating floral lamps on the River Ganges to commemorate the deceased ancestors. The Haridwar hosts religious festivals like Kavad mela, Somvati Amavasya mela and Ganga Dussehra throughout the year. When you visit Haridwar you must keep time aside to visit all the temples situated in the city and experience the pious and holy atmosphere.
