The ancient capital of the Chalukya rulers, is renowned for the group of the 8th century monuments. Pattadakal or Pattadakallu lies on the banks of Malaprabha River are a USECO World Heritage site. The uniqueness of this place derives from the presence of both the Southern and the Northern styles of temple architecture.
It is not only popular for Chalukyan architectural activities but also a holy place for royal coronation, 'Pattadakisuvolal'. Pattadakal is one of the unique places to see that many temples of the early Chalukyan architecture. The oldest temple Sangamesvara dedicated to lord Siva is one of the fine examples of the high architectural standards maintained by the Chaluykan architecture.
An impressive series of nine Hindu temples, as well as a Jain sanctuary, can be seen there. Chalukyan rulers were not only empire builders, but great patrons of art whose encouragement prompted the artists and craftsmen to experiment and innovate in different architectural styles and giving it a new dimension. It is in their period that transition from rock-cut medium to structural temples took place.
