Ellora Caves

Ellora also known as Elapura is an archaeological site built by the Rashtrakuta dynasty. With its uninterrupted sequence of monuments dating from A.D. 600 to 1000, brings the civilization of ancient India to life. This World Heritage Site Located 30 km from the city of Aurangabad, represents one of the largest rock-hewn monastic-temple complexes in the entire world.

These caves are hewn out of the volcanic basaltic formation. The unique artistic creation with its sanctuaries devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, it illustrates the spirit of tolerance that was characteristic of ancient India. The great Kailasa temple (Cave 16) is famous for the largest single monolithic excavation in the world.

The cave complex comprises of 34 caves that were hewn out of solid rocks of the Charanandri Hills. The Ellora complex includes Cave 1 to 12 are Buddhist monasteries, while caves 13 to 29 are the Hindu temples and caves 30 to 34 are the Jain temples. The exquisite carvings and paintings found in Ellora are its major highlights.

Open time : 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. and Closed on Tuesday.

Entrance Fee : Citizens of India Rs. 10 per head.

Foreign Visitor : US $ 5 or Indian Rs. 250/- per head
