Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary

Spreads over the northwest slopes of the Western Ghats, the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary comes under Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot and an integral part of the Wayanad Elephant Reserve under Project Elephant. Covering a total of 74.22 sq. km, the sanctuary is one of the attractive places of wilderness in the entire stretch of Western Ghats.

The floral diversity of Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is commendable. The vegetation covers mostly include Marshy Grasslands, Southern Hill-top Evergreen forests, Grasslands, Southern Moist Mixed Deciduous, West-coast Semi evergreen and West-coast Tropical Evergreen forests. About 680 species of flowering plants have been recorded here. Over 200 species of medicinal plants are found here along with about 50 ferns.

The rich biodiversity of Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary include 41 species of mammals, 179 species of birds, 38 amphibian species and 143 species of butterflies. Common mammals of the sanctuary include Nilgiri Langur, Leopards, Tigers, Gaurs, Elephant, and many more. About 52 species of fishes are also supported by the streams.

LOCATION : Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Kakkayam town of Kozhikode district in the south Indian state Kerala.

WHEN TO VISIT : The most preferable time to visit Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is from the months of November to March. During that time the temperate climate would allow you to spend quite some time viewing the graces of Mother Nature.

CLOTHING : Cotton or linen full-sleeve outfits which match with surroundings like dark green, muddy-brown and rocky-grey are the ideal clothing color. Avoid shiny or reflective clothes during safari which may diverts or attracts wild animals & birds’ attention which may become cause them leaving the place.

OPENING OF SANCTUARY: Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary is open throughout the year for visitors.

ZONE IN THE PARK : The zones in the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary are:

PERMIT : Permits obtain from the concerned park authority before you make entry to the Park. Tourists can obtain day visit permit at entry gate.

ENTRY FEE:

For Indian nationals is Rs. 10 per person and Children (5- 12 yrs) - Rs. 05 for a visit.

For foreign national, the entry fee Rs. 100 per person for a visit.

Jeep Safaris at Malabar can be done in morning and afternoon Shift. Travelers are allowed to travel along with one naturalist and one driver. It is advisable to book safari rides in well advance to avoid any chance of unavailability.
