Kangra historically known as Nagarkot is one of the most picturesque valleys of lower Himalyas. The town is situated at the confluence of the Baner and Majhi streams. History of Kangra valley dates back to the Vedic times more than 3500 yrs. ago. The city was supposedly founded by Raja Bhim, younger brother of Kuru Emperor Yudhisthira.
Sheltered by the sublime Dhauladhar range Kangra town is famous for its temples. The temple of Devi Vajreshwari was one of the oldest and wealthiest in northern India. Other ancient temples like the Jawalaji Temple, Vajreshwari Devi temple, Chamunda Devi temple, Chintapurni temple Baba Baroh, and Baijnath temple are found here.
The historical Kangra Fort was built by the royal Rajput family of Kangra. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest dated fort in India. The arts and crafts of the region continued to develop and found lyrical expressions. Crafts like the exquisitely designed shawls and miniature paintings of this region are internationally appreciated.
