Hemis - High Altitude National Park

Hemis National Park is a high-altitude national park in the eastern Ladakh region is home to rare species like the bharal and the snow leopard. The park is bounded on the north by the banks of the Indus River, includes the catchments of Markha, Sumdha, Rumbak and parts of the Zanskar Range. The Department of Wildlife Protection, Government of Jammu and Kashmir is the custodian of the Hemis National Park.

The Park also has the distinction of being among the largest contiguous protected region, second only to Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. The park is protected home for endangered mammals like leopards, Asiatic ibex, Tibetan wolf, the Eurasian brown bear and the red fox. The park boasts of 200 leopards and is the only habitat of Shapu or the Ladakhi Urial in India. It is also home to small mammals like Himalayan marmot, mountain weasel and Himalayan mouse hare.

The park houses numerous Tibetan gompas and holy chortens within its boundaries. The 400-year-old Hemis Monastery is also located within the park. Revered as the largest monastic institution in Ladakh, a trip to the monastery is a thrilling experience. Hemis was a destination and via point on the silk routes of Tibet. People live inside the park presently, with a large number of tourists and pilgrims visiting during the Hemis Tsechu festival.

WHEN TO VISIT : Since the winters are very harsh, so it's best to plan your trip in between April to June and September to December.

CLOTHING : Cotton and light woolen outfits which match with surroundings like dark green, muddy-brown and rocky-grey are the ideal clothing color. Avoid shiny or reflective clothes during park safari which may diverts or attracts wild animals & birds’ attention which may become cause them leaving the place.

How To Reach

By Bus

Hemis national park in can be easily reached by road due to its proximity to the town of Leh. Leh is connected by good motorable roads to all major places in India.

By Train

The nearest rail-head Jammu Tawi is connected with all major cities and towns in India. From there the onward journey has to be undertaken on buses or taxis.

By Air

The nearest airport Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport, Leh is 40 km away from Hemis National Park. Leh airport is connected by flights with different cities in India.

OPENING OF PARK: Hemis National Park is open throughout the year for visitors. Since the winters are very harsh, so it's best to plan a trip during the summer.

PERMIT : Permits obtain from the concerned park authority before to visit this fragile ecosystem. Tourists can obtain day visit permit at the respective entry gates.

ENTRY FEE

Entry fee for Indian nationals is Rs.20 per person.

For foreign national, the entry fee Rs.100 per person.

:Hemis National Park is offers unique opportunities for wildlife lover. The only way to enjoy the park is to trek in the park. No hotels are available in or near Hemis National Park. Several gompas and chortens are also located within the park and provide accommodation to visitors.

One can trek the park with recognized and experienced guides, porters and cook. Trekking in the park is no easy task and requires a person to be in shape. On the way to your track you can explore the biodiversity of fauna and flora. It is better to do some prior preparation in the form of things to carry, which include basic trekking equipment such as tents, sleeping bags etc.
